Float On to teenage dreams

This time last Sunday night was I was blissing out to one band in particular that I recall from early years of High School. Custard and in particular one song, Girls Like That (Don’t Go For Guys Like Us), I can’t tell you how many times I taped that song when I was younger. It was number 3 in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 1998. I was in Year 8. The start of a few years at high school where I was one of a few who listened to Triple J and an even smaller few who listened to Triple Zed. I’ve got having older brothers to thank in part for that. Musically, I was more of a Switzerland, though for all intensive purposes I still am – we’ll leave that however to a later discussion.

Custard

Above is Custard at The Hi-Fi as they took part in a flood relief concert called Float On along with other 90s greats; Regurgitator and Screamfeeder as well as some more contemporary acts in the likes of Kate Miller-Heidke, Gentle Ben and His Sensitive Side, Hungary Kids of Hungary and Little Scout.

Float On was one of the best mutli headlined shows I’ve been to in years. For so many people in the audience it was a total throwback to the days when they were younger. I heard someone say, that they’ve never seen so many 30-40 year old men in a moshpit. It was a sight. It was a common thread amongst the “contemporary acts” in their banter to talk about how this was such a teenage dream to be playing alongside the likes of Custard, the “Gurge” and Screamfeeder. It was almost like an episode of Recovery, which I really wish was still around because triple j tv, you’re just not in the same league.

Back to the music though because until we get that time travel sorted out there is only so much one can natter on about the past.

and some more 1998. Regurgitator – Polyester Girl

Quite possibly my favourite Custard song. Music is Crap. Oh gosh, let me tell you I had a smile that stretched from one ear to the other when they started this song.

I strongly recommend checking out this collection of videos from the night. You too can indulge in some fine music that sums up an era in Brisbane music.

The only way I think the night could have been any better would have been if Sekiden were playing as well.

the absence of metal in my mouth makes me happy

Oh hello teeth, it’s so nice to see you again

No Metal on these teeth anymore

Thursday morning whilst those in NQ were starting to assess the damage of TC Yasi, I was reclined in a chair at the UQ Dental School getting my braces removed and the result is what you see above. I do of course have a retainer to wear full time for the next three months or so and then at night after that for a long time but it’s removable, which makes it all good.

These are my teeth 23OCT2008, the day that I got my braces put for this round. You can see the false tooth I used to wear, it matched my teeth so well …

I also came away with a souvenir of sorts, a plaster set of my teeth. They took a number of impressions and I got this set as the 11 is chipped.

Munch, munch, munch

Now all that remains to having a full smile, is two appointments with the prosthodontist. Yippee. As long as there are no catastrophes of course, I’ll be sporting a full smile on Feb 24. The day before I go to Tasmania for the wedding of my cousin and five days before I go to Japan πŸ˜€

It’s not Happy Feet, it’s Happy Teeth πŸ˜€

Cyclones and Cakes

I’ve thought about staying up till TC Yasi crosses the coast watching the twitter feeds but at the end of the day there is nothing I can do down here yet and I do have work tomorrow and the braces come off tomorrow as well. The people I know up north are all prepared as they can be so all we can do is sit and wait for the train wreck to happen.

I made the Iced VoVo cake from Raspberri Cupcake last night/this morning for an afternoon tea at work today and it went down quite well. I used the strawberry jam I made before Christmas on the cake as well πŸ™‚

and that is all for Wednesday 02FEB11.

light, water and no water

I think this could have been the theme song for the eastern seaboard states this summer. It’s something everyone is talking and asking about. Just how is the water?

I’m now mostly settled back in the family home. I did however receive an upgrade from the West Room (my former residence as young adult) to the Balcony Suite (which my two brothers lived in at various times). Apart from obviously having a balcony (it’s 2.5m x 0.9m as in big enough to have perhaps a table and chair but no more than that) it has windows on two sides facing south and east over the garden. I’m not just talking about a window on each side. I’m talking about windows that run the entire length of two sides of the room from thigh height to the ceiling.

Believe me I’m in light heaven. There is light and I love the light.

The new room

Went to lunch today at Gusto da Gianni at Portside with the ladies from work as one of the nurses turn 60 on Wednesday. The decor was interesting, cohesion was lacking in some areas, not just with the decor but also with the serving ware. Every single dessert dish came on different serving ware. The gelato was served in a what is best described as a Tuscan pasta bowl and the tiramisu was in a gorgeous conical frustum glass bowl. It was different. That aside the food was generally pretty ok.

These photos are the end of the flood for me. I’ve spent time with SES cleaning up streets, I’ve spent time in my own clothes cleaning up streets, I’ve spent time sorting through my belongings and the water logged belongings of total strangers.

and that folks is how the water rose and fell on the house that I used to live in.

and it keeps getting better

I put $20 into the work lotto pool yesterday for the first time in almost a year because I’m feeling a little lucky at the moment.

Rainbow teeth.
Two weeks to go

A little while ago, I made a deal with my then post grad orthodontist that for the very last time I got colours put on, I would get a rainbow. Well two post grad orthos later and I now have rainbow colours. It’s quite a change from the black I’ve chosen for most of my changes in the last few years.

I went to the orthodontist today and left a pretty happy lady. I’m getting de-banded (that means getting the braces off in slightly fancy orthodontist speech) in two weeks. YAY, the end of this metal in the mouth since 1996 saga is almost over.

I’m waiting to hear back in the morning from my prosthodontist as to when the last few appointments will be.

Happy Times πŸ™‚

and then there was good news

I’ve been out all day today with SES clearing streets in Chelmer and St Lucia.

I was very happy to come home to this email from QUT.
